The perfect reading glasses and sunglasses create balance. For example, if you have a square face, soft shapes will often suit you better than sharp edges. Choose a frame that complements your features and creates a harmonious look. Discover your perfect eyewear match with our face shape guide...
What is your face shape?
To find the perfect reading glasses or sunglasses, you first need to determine your face shape. Is your face round, long, square, oval, or heart-shaped? Are you unsure what shape your face is? Don't worry, we'll guide you to find your face shape with two very simple methods, which you'll find at the bottom of the article.
5 typical face shapes
We have chosen to show the five typical face shapes – but keep in mind that not all faces fit 100% into one shape. You might be a mix of two face shapes, for example, square and oval. Be aware that your face shape can change over time. Both weight and age can alter its shape.

1. Oval face – versatility and free style
An oval face is harmonious and slightly rounded, with proportions that make it easy to wear almost any frame. It is the most versatile face shape, so it's mostly about finding reading glasses or sunglasses that match your personality and style. Tip: You have freedom – use it! Trust your gut and choose glasses that highlight the expression you want to show the world.
Go for:
• Almost all frames – play with your expression and style!
• Square glasses with character
• Round or statement glasses with an edge
Avoid:
• Glasses that are too wide or cover too much of your face
• Frames that disrupt your face's natural proportions

2. Round face – create contrast and edge
Round faces have soft, harmonious lines and almost the same width at the forehead, cheeks, and jaw. This gives a friendly and youthful look. The goal with your reading glasses or sunglasses is to add visual length and define the contours of your face. Tip: Thin or transparent frames in darker colors provide both lightness and structure.
Go for:
• Angular frames (square and rectangular)
• Light oversized glasses
• Glasses with upward lines
Avoid:
• Round frames that emphasize the face's shape
• Small glasses that 'disappear'

3. Square face – soften and balance
A square face has strong, striking features with a wide forehead and jaw. It exudes character and strength. Here, the key is to choose reading glasses or sunglasses that soften the lines and add roundness and balance. Tip: Transparent frames in colors make the expression softer and lighter.
Go for:
• Round, oval, or slightly curved frames
• Thin frames or soft shapes
• Frames with upward lines
Avoid:
• Very angular frames that emphasize angles
• Heavy frames

4. Heart-shaped face – balance wide forehead and narrow chin
With a wider forehead and high cheekbones that taper down to a pointed chin, heart-shaped faces have a naturally soft and feminine expression. Here, the goal is to create balance by drawing attention downwards. Tip: Choose transparent frames in darker colors or frames with visual weight at the bottom for a balanced look.
Go for:
• Slightly curved or oval frames
• Glasses with thin frames
• Glasses with a wider bottom
Avoid:
• Heavy top frames and oversized upward frames
• Very dark and heavy glasses at the top

5. Oblong face – create width and balance
An oblong face is longer than it is wide, with high cheekbones, a long nose, and often a high forehead. The key here is to 'shorten' the face visually and give it more width. Tip: Details on the upper edge of the glasses, such as color play or patterns, create focus and shorten the face's expression.
Go for:
• Deep frames with height
• Statement glasses or colorful tops
• Oval or round lenses
Avoid:
• Narrow, horizontal frames
• Glasses that sit too high on the nose

Help finding your face shape
You might find it difficult to discern if you have a round, oval, or square face – and we understand! The face shape guide is meant as inspiration, not as strict rules. At OjeOje, we believe the best reading glasses and sunglasses are those you feel comfortable with. Style is not just about shapes and lines – it's about personality, fit, and gut feeling. Find your face shape with two very simple methods:
Method 1: Trace your face shape
The easiest method to find your face shape is with a mirror and an eyeliner. Pull your hair back with a couple of clips, a headband, or into a ponytail. Stand in front of a mirror. Close one eye and trace the outline of your face on the mirror – it's that easy to see your face shape.
Method 2: Measure your face shape
If you're not confident with the tracing method, you can instead try measuring your face shape (see top image). Take a photo of yourself or have someone else do it. The photo should be taken straight on and close up, and your hair should be away from your face with clips, a headband, or in a ponytail. Print the photo, preferably as large as possible on A4 paper, find a ruler, and measure the following four distances:
1. Measure the width of your forehead at its widest point.
2. Measure the width of your face where your cheekbones are widest.
3. Measure the width of your face where your jaw is widest.
4. Measure the length of your face from your hairline to your chin.
– now you can see the shape of your face!
