What are reading glasses?

Reading glasses are glasses where the lens or spectacle glass functions as a magnifying glass, making things like books, phones, computer screens, and menus easier to read. Reading glasses are typically used when one develops presbyopia, which is age-related diminished vision. It's also called farsightedness – but not by us! When you need reading glasses, you typically experience it as gradually becoming more difficult to focus sharply, especially on letters that are close up. Many describe a feeling that their arms suddenly feel too short to get the distance that makes vision better. This is where OjeOje reading glasses come in and can be the solution.

What are 'ready-to-wear' glasses?

There are glasses you can buy from opticians, and then there are 'ready-to-wear' reading glasses – also called 'pre-made' reading glasses, which you can buy online from OjeOje. Customers who have discovered our reading glasses and can use them have the same strength in both eyes. This means that if you need different strengths in each lens, which are called multifocal glasses or progressive lenses, then you need to go to an optician for custom-made glasses for your specific vision. If, however, there is nothing wrong with your vision apart from the natural need for reading glasses once you've passed the milestone of your 40s, you can certainly buy 'ready-to-wear' reading glasses.

When do you need reading glasses?

Almost all of us will need reading glasses when we hit our 40s. Presbyopia occurs naturally as we age, as the eye's lens becomes less flexible and elastic. This specifically means that our eyes' ability to switch focus between distances deteriorates with age. It often starts around the age of 40, for some not until their mid-40s, and gradually increases as we get older. Reading glasses work by compensating for the lack of elasticity in the eye's lens, thereby restoring your sharp vision. The strength must therefore precisely match your eyes' level of elasticity.

What strengths are reading glasses available in?

Reading glasses are positive power glasses, and they typically range from +0.5 to +3.0. Most people, however, don't realize they need reading glasses until they require a strength of +1. Reading glasses are what we can call 'pre-made' glasses or 'ready-to-wear' reading glasses – and are not custom-made by an optician.

You can buy 'ready-made' reading glasses if you know your strength and do not have, for example, astigmatism or other vision challenges that need to be considered. You find out exactly what strength you need by getting an eye exam. All opticians offer eye exams – some for free and some for a fee. Many reading glasses users also try it out on their own. At OjeOje, we recommend that you have your eyes checked every year.

Which strength should you choose for your reading glasses?

You can find out your precise strength by getting an eye exam with an optician – but you can also use our age-divided strength guide as a rule of thumb:

35-40 years: +0.5 reading glasses
40-45 years: +1.0 reading glasses
45-50 years: +1.5 reading glasses
50-55 years: +2.0 reading glasses
55-60 years: +2.5 reading glasses
60-65 years: +3.0 reading glasses

– if you are still in doubt and wavering between two strengths, we recommend choosing the lower one.
