FAQ

What are reading glasses?

Reading glasses are spectacles with lenses that make objects such as books, phones, and computer screens easier to focus on. They are used when presbyopia develops, which makes it harder to focus on close-up objects. Presbyopia is age-related and unavoidable, but fortunately, it can be easily compensated for with reading glasses.

What are 'ready-to-wear' glasses?

There are glasses that you can buy from opticians, and then there are 'ready-to-wear' reading glasses – also known as 'pre-made' reading glasses, which you can buy online at OjeOje. Customers who have discovered our reading glasses and can use them have the same strength in both eyes. This means that if you need different strengths in each lens, which is called multifocal glasses or progressive glasses, then you need to go to an optician and get custom-made glasses for your specific vision. However, if there is nothing wrong with your vision other than the natural need for reading glasses once you've passed the milestone of your 40s, you can easily buy 'ready-to-wear' reading glasses.

Are reading glasses the same as optician-prescribed glasses?

Reading glasses and optician-prescribed glasses may seem like the same thing, but they're not quite. Reading glasses are typically off-the-shelf items, ready for immediate use. Their function is to magnify what is in front of you. Glasses with a prescription from an optician are custom-made for your specific vision.

Often, optician-prescribed glasses also compensate for other individual visual imperfections, beyond just the need for reading glasses. This could, for example, include astigmatism.

Can I use reading glasses instead of prescription glasses?

It depends on your vision! If you need multifocal, progressive, or bifocal lenses, you will need to see an optician to get custom-made reading glasses for your vision. For most people who need reading glasses, however, regular reading glasses are exactly what their eyes need to compensate for common presbyopia.

If there's nothing else wrong with your vision besides needing reading glasses, you can easily buy ready-made, ready-to-wear reading glasses, like ours.

Can I buy glasses with different strengths in the lenses?

Unfortunately, we cannot offer different strength lenses in one pair of glasses. OjeOje glasses are pre-made and ready-to-wear in strengths from 0 to +3.

Can I put new lenses in a pair of glasses from OjeOje?

Because OjeOje glasses are 'ready-to-wear' reading glasses and ready for use, we cannot replace the lenses for you. However, if you have fallen in love with a pair of OjeOje glasses but need prescription glasses, most opticians can assess whether it is possible to replace the lenses for you, if feasible.

Can I order glasses without prescription?

Yes! We have a wide range of non-prescription glasses if you're looking for a cool new look but don't need glasses for vision correction.

When do I need reading glasses?

You most likely need reading glasses if you…
… are over 40 years old. The speed at which our vision changes varies, but most people develop presbyopia and need reading glasses during their 40s.
… experience blurry or perhaps decidedly dim vision at normal reading distance.
… need to hold your phone, book, or laptop further away than before to see the letters properly.
… particularly struggle to see small print or to read in dim lighting. Restaurants and menus can be a serious challenge. And it only becomes more pronounced as we get older. By the age of 60, we need three times more light than we did at 20!
… get really tired eyes when reading a book, working on the computer, or doing other close-up tasks.
… often get a bad headache when you try to read.

What strength reading glasses can I buy?

OjeOje offers reading glasses in strengths: +0.5, +1.0, +1.5, +2.0, +2.5, +3.0 and sunglasses with prescription in strengths: +1.0, +1.5, +2.0, +2.5 and +3.0.

Is there a big difference between +1.0 and +1.5?

The higher the number – the stronger the power. This means that +1.5 is stronger than +1.0. And because reading glasses magnify, the higher the power, the larger objects will appear. As a rule of thumb, you can see which power you need based on your age:
40-45 years: +1.0
45-50 years: +1.5
50-55 years: +2.0
55-60 years: +2.5
60-65 years: +3.0
– if you are unsure or are between two strengths, we recommend choosing the lower one. To know your precise power, you should have an eye test at an optician.

What strength reading glasses should I choose?

You can learn about your precise strength by having an eye test with an optician – but you can also use our age-divided strength guide as a rule of thumb:
40-45 years: +1.0
45-50 years: +1.5
50-55 years: +2.0
55-60 years: +2.5
60-65 years: +3.0
– if you are in doubt or are wavering between two strengths, we recommend that you choose the lower one.

How should glasses fit?

Comfortable! When choosing a pair of glasses from OjeOje, make sure they sit correctly on your nose and feel good. Your frames should be in line with the center of your eyes horizontally, and the frames should not go higher than your eyebrows.

Does OjeOje sell unisex glasses?

We do! All OjeOje glasses are unisex and can be worn by anyone, as long as the frame fits you in size. All our glasses have a width of approx. 14 cm.

Do reading glasses have to be expensive?

If you only need glasses for reading or seeing things up close, inexpensive reading glasses are often perfectly adequate. All OjeOje glasses are of the highest quality, have a comfortable fit with flexible hinges, and cost only DKK 250 per pair and DKK 600 for 3 pairs, including free shipping.

What makes OjeOje climate-friendly?

At OjeOje, we continuously monitor the climate. This means that ALL our glasses are made from recycled plastic, originating from transparent plastic packaging from food, bottles, and screw caps. Instead of ending up and accumulating as waste, it is crushed and transformed anew into the unique, cheeky, and colorful OjeOje reading glasses and sunglasses, which you can mix, match, and complete your look with – and create extra attention!

• All our glasses are recycled and carefully manufactured from recycled plastic, originating from transparent plastic packaging from food, bottles, and screw caps. Instead of ending up and accumulating as waste, it is crushed and transformed anew into unique, cheeky, and colorful OjeOje reading glasses and sunglasses, which you can mix, match, and complete your look with – and create extra attention!

• All our glasses are 100% free of phthalates.

• A cool recycled case is included with every pair of glasses.

• We reduce our CO2 footprint by using limited amounts of packaging and exclusively FSC-certified paper.

• We produce everything that is at all possible in Denmark. Our glasses are designed here in the country, and then produced by our carefully selected GRS (Global Recycled Standard) certified manufacturer in Taiwan.

• We say no to overproduction and only produce new glasses when we see the need for it.

• We also design reading glasses from existing glasses, which have been assembled in a new, colorful and sustainable way. The purpose of the design is to emphasize our focus on upcycling, as there is no reason for us to burden our planet by constantly producing new.

• Our upcycled fabric cases are hand-sewn by volunteer Soroptimists in Denmark from leftover fabric from the textile company Kvadrat. All proceeds from the sale of cases go to Soroptimist International's important work: to improve the lives and status of women and girls.

• We support the Danish environmental organization Plastic Change, which fights for ambitious goals for the reduction and recycling of plastic.

• We donate reading glasses to refugee camps in Mizoram through CHO (Chin Health Organization).

• We donate reading glasses to women in Burundi and Bangladesh through the slow fashion company Coffee Beanies and the interior company Manelleh. We want to be mindful of raising the living standards for women worldwide.

• We collaborate with Væksthuset, where we help unemployed citizens who need extra help and support.

What is recycling?

Recycling simply means reuse. When we talk about recycling, we are dealing with materials or products where the raw material is used again. This can be, for example, food packaging, toys, clothes, and furniture, which are processed and given a new form – often as something completely different. OjeOje glasses, for instance, are made from recycled plastic that was previously food packaging, screw caps, and plastic bottles.

What is upcycling?

Upcycling means reusing materials and products in a new function without first breaking down the product. The material or product remains intact but can be used in a new way or in a new context. This is precisely what we do with our spectacle cases, which are sewn from surplus fabric from the Danish textile company Kvadrat.

Does OjeOje make computer glasses?

We do not sell glasses that filter out blue light. We recommend using Night Shift on your screen and mobile device. Night Shift automatically adjusts the colors on your screen to the warmer end of the color spectrum when it gets dark. This can help you get a better night's sleep.

Will OjeOje glasses go on sale?

At OjeOje, we offer consistently good prices and permanent deals on glasses. That's why you can always advantageously grab 3 pairs at once. One pair costs DKK 250, and you get 3 pairs for DKK 600, including free shipping. You can choose freely across the assortment and find your favorites for your unique look.

Can I mix 3 pairs of glasses for 600 kr.?

Of course! Feel free to mix and match! You can choose between:
Reading glasses, Sunglasses with prescription, Sunglasses and Glasses without prescription.

What glasses shape suits me?

The optimal eyeglass frame balances your face shape instead of mirroring it. For example, if you have a square face, square glasses will make you look even more square. Of course, you don't have to go to the complete opposite extreme and buy round glasses, but some reading glasses will balance your face shape and give a more harmonious look than others.

What color glasses suit me?

The color of your glasses frames is very important. It can change the way both your face and your outfit look. The color of your glasses can make your face light up and give you a more modern expression – or it can do the opposite.

Grey hair
If you add more color, such as orange, blue, or green, it will create a beautiful contrast and make your face stand out.

Blonde hair
Go for light and soft colors like sand or green.

Brown hair
Brown, orange, or tortoise are fantastic choices for you.

Dark hair
Go for dark colors like black and tortoise.

Red hair
Colors like tortoise, blue, and black are beautiful for you.

TIP: Choose the color of your glasses frames based on your hair color rather than your eye color!

What's the best way to clean my glasses?

To prolong the life of your glasses, they need to be cleaned correctly. Protect the environment and don't buy glasses cleaner spray or cleaning wipes! You can easily clean your glasses with tap water and a drop of eco-friendly dish soap.

Guide to clean glasses
1. First, wash your hands
2. Use lukewarm water – not too hot
3. Gently rub a single drop of dish soap onto the glasses – both lenses and frames
4. Rinse the glasses
5. Dry your hands with a towel, and the glasses with a clean microfiber cloth
– and voila! Your glasses are almost like new – and you'll see clearly again!

Why is it important to choose the right glasses?

Glasses are an important accessory when you are over 40. Especially, but not only, if you wear glasses every day. Because then your glasses become one of the most important accessories you own. They do so because:

– They sit right in the middle of your beautiful face, and in many cases are one of the very first things people see.
– They add color to your look.
– They say a lot about you as a person, so take your time to find the glasses that suit you and your style.
– They are an accessory – almost a piece of jewelry, in fact – that you wear every single day, so you should feel that you look good!

What are flexible hinges?

Flexible hinges are spring-loaded hinges that help your glasses fit your face and sit perfectly. This makes the glasses incredibly comfortable to wear, so of course, all OjeOje glasses have flexible hinges. This is also what is referred to as comfortable flex temples.

Are OjeOje glasses nickel-free?

Of course. All our glasses are nickel-free.

What are the glasses made of?

All our glasses are made from recycled plastic sourced from transparent or colored food packaging, bottles, and screw caps. 100% free from BPA and phthalates.

Are cheap reading glasses bad for your eyes?

Ready-made spectacles, or what are also called ready-to-wear reading glasses, are completely safe and can help you focus clearly on things that are close by. So no! No eye damage – just sharp vision at a good price.

What is UV protection in sunglasses?

Most people probably know that the sun can be harmful to our eyesight. That's why all our sunglasses - both with and without prescription - naturally come with 100% UV protection. The sunglasses are equipped with UV400 lenses that effectively protect your eyes from UV damage.

What does PD mean?

PD stands for ‘pupillary distance’ – pupildistance in Danish. PD is the distance from the centre of one pupil to the centre of the other, measured in millimetres. Adults have an average PD between 62 mm and 64 mm. All OjeOje glasses therefore have a PD of 63 mm.

Which glasses should I avoid?

At OjeOje, we believe that when you try on a pair of glasses, the 'yeah' feeling should be tangible – and visible! That's why we think it's a good idea to avoid:
– Outdated or obsolete frames.
– Glasses that visually weigh down your face and make you look tired, sad, and perhaps even older than you are.
– Half-moon glasses. That is, glasses with half lenses.
– Very thick lenses. Always go for lenses that are no thicker than the frame and therefore do not protrude beyond it.

Are OjeOje glasses CE marked?

You bet! All glasses from OjeOje are CE-marked. The CE mark is a legal requirement within the EU, and it ensures that the products comply with European requirements for safety, health, and environment.
