This is because the eye's lens loses its flexibility – in technical terms, we call it presbyopia, and it means that the eye's natural ability to focus deteriorates with age. This happens to everyone and is completely natural, so no need to panic! How to find your strength?
If you are unsure about your exact strength, we always recommend that you book an eye test with an optician. Most places offer free tests, and you are not forced to buy glasses from them. You can also use our simple age-based strength guide to point you towards the correct strength:

45-50 years: +1.5
