What is retinal detachment?
Retinal detachment, also called 'amotio retinae', occurs when the retina separates from its normal underlying tissue. When this happens, the retina no longer receives oxygen and nutrients, which can lead to vision loss if not treated quickly. Retinal detachment often starts with small tears or holes in the retina due to posterior vitreous detachment. This allows fluid to seep in behind the retina and lift it away from the eye wall. Typical symptoms include flashes of light, sudden onset of 'floaters' (black spots or lines in your field of vision), and a dark shadow moving across the field of vision. It is important to react immediately – the sooner you are treated, the greater the chance of saving your vision.
Why do you get retinal detachment?
There are several causes and risk factors. How do you detect retinal detachment?

• Shadow in the field of vision, often like a curtain-like shadow.

Who is at risk of retinal detachment?
Although anyone can be affected, some groups are more vulnerable than others. You have a greater risk if you:

How is retinal detachment treated?

This in itself does not increase the risk of retinal detachment, but in the same age group, the vitreous humor (the gel that fills your eye) begins to change and detach from the retina. "I just thought it was old age – but then the shadow started to grow"

At first, I had problems with 'floaters' – black dots dancing around, especially when I looked at a lit screen. I didn't think much of it, as I'd heard it came with age. The surgery and the first few days after
I was sent to the ophthalmology department at Rigshospitalet, where an eye surgeon confirmed that I had retinal detachment. The surgery was performed the same evening – a vitrectomy, where they removed the vitreous humor and replaced it with a gas bubble to hold the retina in place. After the surgery, it was important to keep my head down for the first few days so that the gas would press in the correct place in the eye. It was tough and required patience, especially because I wasn't allowed to sleep on my back. Vision in the operated eye was very blurry for the first few weeks – like looking through a dirty window.
How is it going today?
Today, almost a year later, my vision in my left eye is almost normal. I have some slight blurriness at the edges, and I still have some 'floaters', but it's nothing compared to what could have happened to my vision. I've learned that I should never ignore changes in my vision. If I had waited a few more days, it might have been too late.
